How Atlas validates its marking
Atlas provides formative practice estimates, not official examination marks. We publish what has been tested, what remains uncertain and the safeguards used when the system should not produce a numerical score.
Current verified coverage
- 207 reviewed launch questions across 49 specification topics.
- AQA 8035, Pearson Edexcel Geography A 1GA0 and Eduqas Geography B C112U.
- 54 automated integration checks covering question identity, supported profiles, level ranges, scoring eligibility and marking guardrails.
- One shared reviewed question catalogue across Free, Plus and Premium.
Safeguards
- A numerical estimate is only allowed when the submitted question matches reviewed metadata.
- The displayed question, submitted question and marking profile are checked for consistency.
- AO1, AO2 and AO3 remain visible; SPaG is not included in the score.
- Evidence quality and material misconceptions must affect holistic best-fit placement.
- Unsupported or mismatched questions fail closed to feedback-only treatment.
Calibration status
Controlled cross-model marking calibration is still in progress.
Atlas is testing deliberately controlled high-, middle- and low-band answers on the Plus and Premium models, including answers with strong evidence but a critical misconception. Until that work is complete, Atlas does not publish an examiner-agreement percentage or claim examiner-equivalent accuracy.
Known limitations
- AI feedback can be wrong and should be checked with a teacher where the result matters.
- Current scored coverage focuses on supported high-tariff written questions.
- Marks from one question cannot reliably predict a final GCSE grade.
- Resource-based geographical skills are being introduced separately and will not be presented as fully supported until reviewed.
